On task training
A plan for improving the attention and behaviour of your students

Teach the plan

  1. What am I trying to do?

  2. What do I need to avoid?

  3. What am I saying to myself?

Step 1 requires clear and simple instructions for students to follow. Check they understand the task and use cues such as “Eyes on me” as a signal that key instructions will be given and the listening skills of students need to be engaged.

Step 2 is an opportunity for students to anticipate problems in maintaining their focus on the task. This might be traps or difficulties in the task itself, the behaviour of other students or distractions within the environment in or around the classroom.

Step 3 provides the internal reminders for what is needed to overcome distractions and maintain concentration. These need to be simple and can be reinforced with posters and constant repetition.
